15th February 2016 by Global Disability Watch

Evan Cowo (Belize)

Evan is a graduate of MICO University Jamaica and University of the West Indies Mona Campus Jamaica. As a trained teacher of the blind and visually impaired children and youth he has worked in advancing inclusive education practices in his country. He has many years of Community Based Rehabilitation experience through the Community Agency for Rehabilitation and Education of persons with disabilities (CARE- Belize), an NGO he directed for ten years until it morphed into The Inspiration Center (TIC) under the auspices of Mrs Kim Simplistic Barrow, wife of the Prime Minister of Belize. He is presently a CBR consultant for TIC and is experimenting with a model of Clinical and CBR interventions in Belize, a model he believes is practical in Belize and the Caribbean region. He has worked with advocacy groups, parent support groups and has liaised with other NGOs in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities in Belize.

An avid CBR practitioner, Evan has assisted in involving relevant government ministries to change policies that will promote CBR philosophy. He has also participated in many CBR conferences around the region. Evan also serves as a member of the board of governors for Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the largest referral hospital in Belize.
