International women of courage award for work with people with albinism

5th April 2016 by Global Disability Watch

Vicky Ntetema, Executive Director of Under The Same Sun (UTSS) in Tanzania received the 2016 International Women of Courage Award. The award was presented by the Honorable John F. Kerry, Secretary of State, at the U.S. Department of State, in Washington, D.C.

UTSS works towards ending the often deadly discrimination against people with albinism via advocacy and education. UTSS is also a member organisation of GDW.

This award honours women who have demonstrated extraordinary courage and leadership in advocating, often at great personal risk, for social justice, human rights, gender equality, and the advancement of women and girls. It is the only Department of State award that pays tribute to outstanding women leaders worldwide. Vicky’s undercover work made her the first Tanzanian to expose the grizzly attacks and killings of persons with albinism to the international community.
